Climbing the Mountain of Database Reliability at Quizlet

At Quizlet, as our service grows, the data layer must scale accordingly. The challenges of scaling the data layer range from how data are modeled to the constraints of using managed services. In the 2021 back to school season, Quizlet approached increasing reliability by adding a proxy between the web services and databases. This pattern optimizes our workflows to databases and provides new visibility into our platform. In this session, I will discuss the impact on database reliability, how it facilitates cross-team cooperation as well as lessons learned after running this setup for a year.

Mason Leung is a SRE turned Data Engineer at Quizlet. He works on data store reliability and service resilience. Previously, he was an Infrastructure Engineer with a focus on infrastructure design and operation tools development in various startups.
