Life in a startup requires us to "wear multiple hats.” These extra roles -- for an engineer — do not include product management directly. However, in the startups I've worked for, the engineering team makes as many decisions (or at times far more) than a typical product manager makes further along a product cycle. Managing products on the scale of a startup developer has helped me influence startups I’ve worked for more than either of those roles would in a traditional sense.
