The Modern Lawyer: A Guide to Accessing Cost-Effective Legal Services

Think you can’t afford an attorney to help you and your business? Think again. At this session, you will meet the modern lawyers revolutionizing the practice of law in Colorado and expanding access to affordable legal services. Panelists include entrepreneurial lawyers who will highlight creative, flexible, and cost-effective strategies that can help you and your business. The panelists will offer tips to find a suitable lawyer and discuss strategies to work with your lawyer to reduce your legal bill. High-quality legal help should not be cost-prohibitive for startups and small businesses. This panel will address how and your business can benefit from legal advice without breaking the bank.

Moderator: JP Box, author & entrepreneur. JP is a lawyer-turned-entrepreneur and author. He practiced law for six years in Washington, DC, and Denver, Colorado. He left the practice of law to co-found and run a merino wool children’s apparel company called Chasing Windmills (www.chasingwindmillskids.com). JP is also the author of the book, “The Millennial Lawyer: How Your Firm Can Motivate and Retain Young Associates” (American Bar Association 2018). As a lawyer and business owner, JP understands the legal hurdles and issues impacting start-ups.

Panelists:
Kristen Belolan is a corporate attorney who has devoted her law practice to serving startups and emerging businesses in Colorado. Kristen handles a full spectrum of corporate law matters for her clients, including formation, corporate governance, financing, mergers and acquisitions, contracts, and commercial transactions. In addition to her years of experience as an attorney, Kristen spent several years as a business development executive in the legal technology industry. Her firm, KNB Counsel, provides flat-fee packages and subscription-based support to some of the most innovative companies in Colorado.

Martin J. Champagne, Jr. is originally from New Hampshire and has an undergraduate degree in English and Film Studies. He graduated from the University of Florida College of Law and he practices at his firm, Champagne Law Firm, located in Denver, Colorado and Tampa, Florida. His practice is focused on business litigation and trial representing small to medium sized businesses in various claims in state and federal court. He lives in Denver with a 108-pound all black German Shepard that his neighbors insist is an illegal wolf.

Adrienne Fischer is the founder of Basecamp Legal, a Denver based law firm offering quality legal solutions to startups, small businesses, and growing companies. Small but scrappy. This description could be describing Adrienne or the small businesses and startups she represents. She is a Denver-based lawyer creating quality, cost-effective, and comprehensive legal solutions including: entity formation, contracts, lease reviews, and trademark registration. She cut her teeth on employment law when she left law school. She has represented hundreds of small businesses, the most populous county in the United States, and an up and coming media company. In her career, she is happiest when helping startups and small businesses find the legal strategies and solutions that are right for them.

Lauren Lester practices family law with her modern law firm of Lester Law, LLC. She graduated from the University of Florida (Go Gators!) and earned her law degree from Georgia State University. Before becoming a lawyer, Lauren worked for more than a decade as a project manager overseeing website and web application development for various clients, including Fortune 500 companies and national brands. Lauren understands starting and running a small business and is committed to providing affordable legal services in Colorado.

Shannon Leonard is a paralegal with ABA approved certificate and extensive in house legal department experience including contract process improvements, closing deals, and translating services into integrated, streamlined contractual documents. Saving companies time and money with tools and services that create repeatable and efficient contracting process, so you can contract with confidence!

Yev Muchnik is a corporate attorney specializing in startups, technology and blockchain with 10 years of Big Firm, General Counsel and solo practice experience. She started her career at Squire, Patton, Boggs, after which she moved into the role of General Counsel of a publicly traded company and then to a startup private aviation technology unicorn company. Yev now runs her own solo practice.

Rebecca Payo practices transactional law and has drafted Bylaws, Articles of Incorporation, Nondisclosure Agreements, and other business documents for companies. She has also successfully negotiated settlement agreements for contract disputes and civil litigation. Additionally, Rebecca advises nonprofits and has filed applications for 501c3 status with the IRS. Rebecca is passionate about modern law practice and its client-friendly objective and transformation of the legal profession. She believes that law is a profession of service and legal help should be available to everyone. In addition to her practice, Rebecca volunteers with church organizations and other nonprofits in Denver. She enjoys reading and going on retreats to experience the beauty of life.
