Fireside Chat: Josh Reeves, Gusto

People are the most important part of every business. As a mission-driven organization, we’re building a team that helps businesses focus on what they care about most - their people. We care deeply about attracting a diverse group of folks who will be invested in our customers, our product, and our culture.

If you are hiring the right people, and you realize you can do great things together, then leadership is about empowering employees to do their best work. In this session I will speak about creating an authentic hiring strategy focused on finding values alignment and shared motivations, in addition to relevant skillset. I’ll give real-life examples from Gusto, and dive into how hiring the right people has shaped my leadership style.

Staying true to this strategy means only 1.2% of Gusto applicants receive an offer. However, it’s never about convincing people to join Gusto. It’s not just about having the right skills or experience, but mutually realizing that we can do amazing things together. Once these people are on board, I can take a step back and direct without dictating. I really do let go.

At Gusto we walk the talk. A ‘people-first’ mindset is present in our entire businesses, from the products we offer to the culture we live. I’d be delighted to share my insights with other leaders, diving into the why’s and how’s of hiring people who will ultimately make you a better person.
