International Downtown Association Presents Denver Startup Week a Downtown Achievement Award

The International Downtown Association recognized Denver Startup Week with the Downtown Achievement Award of Excellence for its resourceful approach to presenting 220+ free,community-submitted sessions fully virtually in September 2020.

A jury of peer professionals reviewed, deliberated and evaluated all entries in the 2021 Downtown Achievement Awards. This Award of Excellence acknowledges an excellent response to an urban place management challenge, demonstrating application of industry knowledge and exceeding the jury criteria.

Denver Startup Week was among 19 qualified entries in the category of Economic Development, which IDA identifies as one of the seven professional urban place management practice areas.

Chantel Allbee, Manager of Denver Startup Week at the Downtown Denver Partnership, shared, “DSW’s network of innovators is building an inclusive, connected, empowered, and diverse entrepreneurship ecosystem, and strives to make all of our sessions a space where attendees can connect, learn, and grow. Last year, DSW was the most accessible it’s ever been. We enabled participants to watch from anywhere, network remotely, and engage with other like-minded people in a variety of virtual sessions and platforms.”

Last year, our session submissions reflected the need for a transformed event. Denver Startup Week pivoted for 2020, and moved online to empower entrepreneurs to charge ahead as we build communities and support successful businesses moving forward. We heard our community loud and clear – startups and businesses are strengthened through a deliberate focus on developing strong cultures & teams – especially in the face of disruption caused by the pandemic and economic uncertainty.

“Denver Startup Week has demonstrated skillful application of urban place management principles,” said David Downey, IDA President and CEO. “The virtual transition of Denver Startup Week should serve as a framework to all member communities within IDA.”
