Gender Equality in Entrepreneurship

Promoting gender equity in entrepreneurism is necessary to boost the economy and achieve greater growth of countries.

Due to the strategic position that companies have in the economic development of countries, their support for gender equity is crucial to increase productivity and human well-being, regardless of their classification in the Global Development Index.

Women become entrepreneurs to obtain independent income, develop an innovative idea, further a career, gain flexibility between work & family, and for necessity. This being a factor that has a direct relation between the level of development of the country and the rate of business development; achieving women’s equality can add $12 trillion to global growth. (McKinsey Global Institute, 2015)

In countries where there is a greater number of female entrepreneurs, there is higher economic growth. In contrast, countries that have a stagnant economy also see an impact on the social environment. In spite of this, there is currently twice as much male entrepreneurship as female.

Despite the increase in the labor participation of the female gender, women continue to have diverse problems, according to the World Economic Forum (WEF). The 2016 Report on the Gender Gap at Global Level shared that the equality of gender in economic and labor activity will be possible in 170 years. (World Economic Forum, 2017) This report also showed a direct relationship between the level of development and business development rates, generating a correlation between the levels of low economic remuneration and the creation of a company developed by women.

The factors that contribute to the generation of entrepreneur women in developed countries are influenced by factors such as independence, self-actualization, increased social status and power. In contrast to women in developing countries where entrepreneurship can be driven by poverty, family separation, and employment to sustain their families economically.

Research in emerging countries by the National Foundation for Women Business Owners (NFWBO) found that women who own businesses have common characteristics regardless of the business, its establishment, administration, operation, and goals. These differ from that of the male gender since they are aimed at owning small businesses, making decisions based on diverse criteria, and a priority for quality of life, instead of increasing business income. Investments are controlled by the lack of support for institutions to obtain credit & limited capital; in contrast to their male counterparts that focus on financial and economic aspects oriented towards profitability. They have similar problems for the growth of their companies, and share common needs to achieve this growth, including access to information, training, technological assistance, and entry into national and international markets.

The gender gap in the business sector increases in developing countries, with the majority of countries in the Latin American and Caribbean region, where only 22% of women work independently (CEPAL, 2010).

That's why we're working to build a global brand that's founded by women and supports women entrepreneurs in developing countries. Atellier Organic Joyas de Autor is a Mexican brand which manufactures and sells jewelry and goldsmith natural semi-precious stones, with handcrafted techniques and ecological process.

We are members of several organizations that focus on helping women entrepreneurs like "Women Owned" (USA), and "Mujeres del Pacífico" (Centroamerica); as well as organizations that assist artisans like "Artisan Alliance" (Switzerland); and organizations that support ecological fashion such as "CO" (London), and "Nest" (USA), and winners of “Women and Business Contest” in the “Pacific Trade Show” in Toronto, Canada 2019.

We emphasize gender equality, our long-term vision is to work with ONGs of single mothers to offer training and sustainable income as we grow.
