Pivot or Persevere?: When to Change Directions and When to Stay the Course

You're in a rut, and you know it. Growth has slowed down, or even halted. And that voice in the back of your mind wonders if your product is what it could be- what it should be?

If this is you, it could be time to pivot.

Eric Ries, in The Lean Startup, says, "A pivot requires that we keep one foot rooted in what we've learned so far, while making a fundamental change in strategy..." So what does it mean to pivot? When is it time to pivot? And how do you pivot?

In this session, entrepreneur Scott Goldie and business strategy consultant Jordan Olivero team up to answer these questions and present pivot case studies and actionable next steps.

Scott will share the story of Yooshu, the world's first custom flip-flop made on-demand. After Yooshu’s initial launch, sales flashed then plateaued. Scott met Jordan and decided to pivot. The decision yielded a new, highly-profitable model extending the startup’s runway. Through Yooshu's story and others, attendees will:

  • Learn the signs of when it's time to pivot (or persevere).
  • Take a critical look at why pivots succeed or fail.
  • Connect with other "makers" to discuss pivots and problem-solve.
  • Understand Yooshu's role in the democratization of manufacturing.

Attendees are encouraged to share their stories in advance with the presenters (Submit yours http://goo.gl/forms/pqOZEL9xOq). A handful will be used as examples to emphasize types of pivots.

  1. Limited to the first 40 people.
  2. Beer, sodas, snacks provided
